I haven't found this to be true. It was accepted more for a while but now, some places have even stopped accepting credit cards altogether near me. Discover is now on the Mastercard network so it is accepted pretty much everywhere now.

I was very annoyed with Amex raising my rates up to 35%, so I dropped them. Discover's cash back is very good, but I use my Visa with frequent flyer miles the most.
