How does this stuff smell? I've read that it's kind of strong? I tried Sumotech recently, but I don't really like the smell.

Also, would this work well for medium length hair (3-4") without weighing it down?

It does have a strong smell, but i like it. It should work well in your case. I've yet to use Gatsby - which everyone on here swears by -- but i've had the best luck with aveda. I've tried MOP, American Crew, Matrix

I tried the Aveda and it worked okay. I recently picked up some Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shaping cream and it by far the best hair product I have used. Great hold without being too firm. Smells great too.

How does the Paul Mitchell stuff feel in your hair? Does it leave it feeling sticky, or can you run fingers through it?

It's not sticky at all. It does hold somewhat firm but I can still run my fingers through.

i used to use (for years) sumotech and switched to aveda. works better for my hair (short) and the smell becomes less noticeable rather quickly.

I used to use Paul Mitchell's molding clay, but then stopped realizing it's way too greasy and a few days ago switched to Aveda. Pleasant smell+does the job...just don't expect a firm hold and use sparingly

I'll have to give it a try. The Aveda cream seems to work well, but I'm not sure about the smell of it. I also noticed that there is alcohol denat. in the ingredients, which I've read can dry out hair.

I don't have a lot of experience with other product so I can't make comparisons however I really like this product. I've been using it ever since it came out on the advice of a friend who is a stylist. I use a tiny bit of the Aveda Flax Seed Aloe when my hair is damp and then, when it is dry, I finish with the Grooming Clay. I don't notice the smell of either product.

since a couple of guys have used both the aveda clay and sumotech, can you tell me how they differ? btw i wear my hair in a side part with sides and back high and tight. i have also tried brylcreem but it doesn't provide the hold i want. my hair is fine and wavy so my main issue is keeping my hair from looking limp. thanks

Honestly, many of the products I've tried lately"”like Fiber, Sumotech, and Aveda clay"”all seem very similar. Even the descriptions from the manufacturer are alike, and many of the ingredients are the same. The main difference that I've noticed between them is the scent. I have medium-length hair, with a side part. Fiber seemed to have a stronger hold, but it was also harder to work with than Aveda and Sumotech.

The only way to know if they'll work for you is through trial and error, unfortunately. Maybe your stylist has some samples?

Funny. I was just about to post that after a few hours, although the aveda holds up well and doesn't make my hair stiff, it does appear dry.

I was going to ask what others use/do to prevent the "dry/matte" look. There are times i like a little shine (heading to an event, party, date) without looking like i have motor-oil in my hair.
