7 inches in the waist? That is not alterable.

so does my inverted triangular body shape mean I can't get any suit from J Crew and I have to get other brands? What brand works for me then? 40 chest, drop to 32 waist

I don't get your problem with J. Crew suiting. They're sold as separates. Buy a 40 jacket and the matching 32 trousers. EDIT: Nevermind... You were referring to the jacket.

torontolaker, I'm a little confused. You wear a size 40 jacket, but you want it to measure 32 inches across the waist? I wear a 38R with size 32 trousers in j.crew suits (aldridge or ludlow). The drop is fine. The measurements you're asking for will get you a silhouette like this, which is not a very masculine look.

Most suits have a standard drop from chest to waist of 2 inches or so. Ralph Lauren Black Label, which is the slimmest suit I have, has a 4 inch drop on a size 40 jacket. It measures 41 inches across the chest and so fits like a 39, and the waist is 37 inches. It's a very slim suit but is about as large a drop as I could go without looking like I borrowed my girlfriend's tight-waisted jacket.

I like j.crew suiting and think it's well made for what it is, and it's flattering to athletic physiques. You could check out Brooks Brothers 1818 line, especially their Fitzgerald and Madison suits, which are pretty slim. But before you do you may want to check out the Men's Clothing WAYWT thread to get a feel for how a suit should fit. the Streetwear & Denim ethos of "size down 2 for perfect fit" doesn't really apply to suits. Congratulations on your V-shaped torso, but even if you have an upper body like the Austrian Oak, a too-tapered suit jacket just looks weird.

Might've been the dressing room lights, but the pants l tried on looked terrible with the dark grey cardigan I was wearing. I could see grey or black possibly working, but blue shirt + green pants?

The tan longwings are a lot like Winn Perry and Leather Soul's - between the three, I'm sure someone will re-stock soon. I have the Winn Perry's, they're great, fwiw. I like the color and double flex sole (+ no sales tax).

So what happens then if I have 7 inch difference or gap in the waist compared to my jacket's waist? The ludlow is already the best fit (around the waist) out of the J Crew suits.. please help.... thx I read about RLBL but it's out of my budget these day..... that's why I'm looking at J Crew...

Is this your first suit purchase? There's no way your body is tapered that much that this jacket would not at least look OK, if not perfect. Morgan's advice above is right. Maybe we are just not understanding what you are asking.

When you buy a suit, the "drop" is the difference in size from the jacket to the pants waist; so a 7 drop on a size 40 suit would mean the waist of the pants is a 33. What that also means is that the jacket is designed for someone with a 33 inch waist, as well. i.e.: the jacket does not taper to exactly the waist size. There are probably some off-the-rack suits that would fit you, but the worst case should be having the pants tailored; that would not be unusual at all.

Since J Crew sells jackets and pants separately, you should have no problem.

I think it is just your understanding of how suit sizing works. Maybe you should go to a mens shop that has lots of suits and try them on to get a feel for how it works and for how they look.

Sorry if this sounds pedantic. We are just trying to help you out here.

sorry, i was referring to the jacket... not the pants... The jacket's chest is designed for 40 inches which is fine for my chest, while the jacket's own waist circumference when buttoned is too big. so even when the button on the jacket is done, there is still 7 inches gap all around my waist and the jacket itself. I'm worried about that waist part of the jacket being overly loose. THat's what I'm talking about. You guys get what I mean now? No, it's not my 1st suit purchase. I've bought a RLBL before and I have reminiscent memory of it's tailored like fit but it's too small now because I've been working out a bit since I got that RLBL suit.

get a tailor to take in the waist of the jacket by a few inches - i find that a 5 or 6 inch difference between jacket waist circumference and body waist circumference is appropriate for me - obviously there needs to be some space between your waist and the jacket..

This will be standard stuff for a tailor, then. Maybe check with one first and see what they say before purchasing.
