Big life change

In the spirit of the good old days of SF- I wanted to start a thread mentioning what I am up to and maybe get some input. I am/have left my job in the lobbying business at the end of the year. Kind of a long story, but I am not left with a ton of options other than to take a severe pay cut. I will continue doing work for my current employer as an independent contractor on a project by project basis, but for now I prefer to collect unemployment so that I may study for the Massachusetts and NY bars. A colleague of mine has opened a law office here in CT and I have referred a few cases to him and i have also done some legal work on my own in the last few months. Potentially I will work for myself after I finish taking the bar in February or join him as a partner. I have also joined the Boston Bar Association and the Boston Irish Business Association in Boston in order to try to get involved in the local business community. I have also made a point of attending a couple of local political fundraisers as this has been a successful and enjoyable way I have networked here in Connecticut. My end goal is to be living in the Boston area with or near my long time girlfriend by the spring. We have wanted to make this life change for a while and finally things are aligned so that I can make a stab at taking the steps to make something happening professionally. In a best case scenario I hope that I might be able to find a position at a small or medium sized firm doing litigation and maybe some type of government related work dovetailing with my experience as a lobbyist. I also feel like now could be a good time to go into public service with a municipality or the state if possible. Any thoughts or advice on organizations to get involved in around Boston would be greatly appreciated. Anyways-- wish me luck! CTGuy

I read the entire post through the voice of Bhowie due to your avatar and could not stop thinking, "Wow, Bhowie sounds a whole lot more mature, old, and professional than I could imagine" and then I saw your username.

Good luck, dude. I have family in Boston and am barred in MA, but I've never actually done any work there. Why Boston?

Thanks guys!

I ran for local office here in my hometown in Northern CT. I was not elected, but helped get a Democrat elected First Selectman (like a mayor) for the first time in probably 20 years.

Shout out to Iammatt for his generous donation to our campaign! The anti-pug former First Selectman is out on his ass.

As much as I enjoy politics here, the combination of wanting to be in a larger city for a multitude of reasons (career, culture, etc.) and my GF who lives outside of Boston are drawing me there. I have a brother and friends working in both Boston and NYC, but I have always wanted to live in Boston since I graduated from college.

I am taking NY as well with the hope that I will not need to take any more bar exams in the near future should I/we look into moving to NYC at some point.

Good luck, CTGuy.

btw: would you then seek a name change as MAguy?

Good luck to you! A law school classmate of mine in the Boston area just opened a solo shop with a niche practice, so it can be done.
