Double monks cheaper than the Lowndes?

What the OP can afford is certainly not your problem, but he did specifically ask for recommendations for an inexpensive shoe. Recommending an expensive shoe and telling him that it's his problem that he can't afford them is really not very helpful (or nice), IMO.Originally Posted by viator

As one or two others suggested you may be dissapointed long term with anything less then the Lowndes in a double monk. If you cannot afford them now wait until you can. The time may come sooner than you think when you can afford them and then you will regret going for a cheaper option.

People on this forum really don't understand that not everyone has £270 to spend on one pair of shoes when there are many other items of clothing and other costs that must be met on a very tight budget.Originally Posted by BareSolid

In all seriousness, I was at the same stage as the OP not too long ago. If I did it all over again, I would have gladly sacrificed my AE Moras and say 2 other AEs to get that one shoe I really like (also Lowndes). I think it's better to take time to build up the wardrobe with pieces you really appreciate rather than many pieces you are lukewarm on.
I'm far from an AE hater, by the way. Love almost all the shoes on the 0 last.

Regarding the budget discussion: C&J is one of those few brands that offer maximum bang for the buck. They are well worth the retail price. Why not wait? Save money until the required amount is reached and buy what you really want?

Here's a photo of a Barker Double Monkstrap, now selling for £110 ($179) on Ebay. Not sure whether Barker is an SF-approved brand, but it's a nice looking shoe.
