Suede Brush - Can It Damage Suede?

I bought a brass bristled (soft-ish..) brush for my suede shoes and when used on a pair, it cleaned them, for sure, but it made a whole bunch of lint like stuff... or was this the suede nap coming off? I got a bit worried and stopped.
It didn't seem to make any difference to the shoes though

I have the same issue with a plastic suede brush. I've also wondered about how the shoes are affected long-term.

The brass bristled suede brushes seem a little agressive for my taste. I seem to recollect that when I used them on light colored suede many years ago, they caused some discoloration.

I prefer a plastic bristled brush along with an eraser (for getting rid of scuffs and stains).

Aren't brass bristles only to be used on problem spots?

Everywhere I see suede brushes advertised or discussed, 90% seem to be Brass?

I've used them for 40 years with no problem. However, now I'm using a softer bristle and the brass one only occasionally.

btw, if you're brushing nubuck don't use the brass one because it will scratch it. Use the softer brush or better yet a rubber brush.

P.S. fine sandpaper is good too for suede.
