The most disappointing item I bought in 2009 has to be the W+H chinos. They are not even slim fitting as advertised-- they are more like a traditionally cut chino with a huge amount of taper added to the lower legs. These look ridiculously sloppy on a skinny guy like myself.

i can totally imagine w+h doing something like that... 6 inch hem does not = slim

Am I missing posts cause I don't see jcrew it a lot of worst purchases. I think I counted 3? Other brands had a lot more of that.

A couple of BoO shirts. Quality of that brand, in my mind, has decreased dramatically for the price.

and the zeitgeist shifts. Reminds me of when I got rid of my jean shops and bought a drkshdw hoodie

Best: probably the knit EG bedford. Think that was this year. CKM jacket a close second
Runners up would be Sierra Designs down vest, ebayed levis cords I wear all the damn time, alden loafers.

Worst: Tie for a couple of ebayed sportcoats (J press, BB) that fit me with a certain "je ne sais JonHecht." Patterns are OK to good but the fit is beyond tailoring. Runners up include EG pennsylvania cardi (haven't found a way to wear it) and a handful of gilt impulses.

Funny seeing this in the best and worst list, but not surprising as all tastes/take on clothes are different, but any reason you thought this was the worst for you sexonfabric?

Best: Fjällräven Greenland parka Le Laboureur cords (great fit for me, amazing fabric. Perfect winter pants) potentially (havent had much chance to wear yet) Paraboot Michaels and vintage fatigue pants worst: illfitting or cheap shirts, ala the 2 barbour bd´s I got at a sale, before realising that both fit like bags with too short sleeves. The puchace that has given me most heart/headace is probably my Filson cruiser mac on accounts of being on the large side, but I think im starting to get used to it. Layering possibility is good in a winter jacket....

Not sure if this is a joke, but it's a recurring theme on SF; one might call it the jet corollary (see also the kitonbrioni theorem and the works of the Dopists). I'd qualify it by saying sure, if you buy something b/c it's cheap, your chances for disappointment and regret increase. However, analysis of the evidence shows that it does not follow that buying expensive items correlates with happiness/consumer satisfaction.

It should be noted that posting pictures online of expensive items does indeed result in growth of epeen. Posters experiencing epeen growth longer than 4 hours should contact a physician.

My purchases this year were usually spread out for financial reasons and because I didn't want to rush putting together a relatively new aesthetic for myself.

Best

  • Epaulet Purple Flannel: Just looks great with anything I've worn it with. I get compliments every time I wear it.
  • Apolis Activism Vandenburg Jacket: SF backlash be damned, this has served me well. I got it on sale from Context last spring, but made good use of it during the fall. It's got a fitted look yet still has room for layering. Plenty of compliments on this one, too.
  • Uniqlo S-002 Black Jeans: After a decade-long layoff from black denim, I decided to switch things up. They were different for me both in the color and fit. I'd been wearing mostly boot cut jeans to that point, so these stood out on me because of their slimmer, but not skinny, fit. Good price, too.

Worst

  • Rogues Gallery Shirt Jacket: Really loved the detailing, but the arm holes were cut a bit high, so I never wound up even taking the tags off.
  • MwoC Jeans: Sorry, but these just didn't do it for me. The denim and hardware were both nuts, but the fit sucked.
  • Returns: I'm thankful for good return policies, but I probably dropped $50+ this year mailing shit back.

Best: 3Sixteen black coated jeans, Nudie Average Joe Dry Heavy jeans, Drykorn wool pants, CM cashmere/cotton/silk cardi, bunch of cheaper stuff not worth mentioning. Worst: Don't know if this counts, but i got a J Crew giftcard awhile back and bought a cotton gray v-neck sweater and some white shorts, they both fit horribly.

^I like my Vandenburg too, but haven't worn it in at least a month since one of the rivets on the front shoulder popped off and Apolis did nothing about it. I haven't found anything suitable to replace it with.
