This is like Sophie's choice.

I just want them both.....

Ummm...lame pole. All are good, but they are made for different moments. In my life, I have more Scotch moments, but I wouldn't give up the Cognac ones. In fact, my last liquor run found me buying more Cognac than whisky. S'all good. ~ H

Goofy poll, but I'll answer:

Scotch. More variety.

I prefer my favorite cognacs to my favorite scotches, so...

Cognac is what I got busted with in my dorm several weeks ago, so I'll have to go with that. The officers complimented my taste. I told them "I like to keep things classy".

My absolute favorite Cognac is Gourmel Quintessence. It is too expensive to break open very often. My other favorite, which is a bit more reasonable, is Audry Memorial. I also have a deep love for Armagnac, especially some of the Darroze bottlings. For Scotch, my tastes are not exotic. I generally enjoy Laphroig, and am into a limited bottling of it which was aged in Chateau Margaux casks. Other than that, I'll drink Johnnie Black more than other whiskys.

I prefer scotch to cognac. As IU said, there is more variation in scotch and I like different tastes for different moods.

I know the Laphroaig you are talking about, its a Murray McDavid and its very interesting. Peaty/iodiney at first, followed by the fruit from the wine cask. I had it at a tasting, but sadly, the only bottle available was the one that they were sampling. Haven't seen it since.

Where are you located? I just picked a bottle up in SF. Yes, it is the Murray McDavid bottling.

Thanks -- My cognac knowledge is somewhat limited (its a funds issue), but I know that I tend to love Armagnacs more. They sing to me. I was not familiar with the Quintessence, but will remember it when I need a star cognac in the bar. Murry Mac does some amazing whiskys. If you ever see the Lagavulin Distillery's Edition, you might enjoy that, secondary aging in PX sherry casks. Works well with its intrinsic Islayness. ~ H

So what is a 'Cognac moment' and what is a 'Scotch moment'?

Cognac moment. Wearing a life jacket, sitting in the 1st class lounge of the Titanic waiting for death.

Scotch moment, anytime from breakfast

I'm a big fan of cognac, but i would never have appreciated it if i hadnt been a whisky drinker. whisky has a hell of a lot more variety though.
