Well what about potential problems? It seems like the 740i has a lot of complicated electronic systems and stuff. Maybe they are super reliable but it just seems like they have a lot of parts that can break or malfunction.

This is true. The 540i will have fewer gadgets to repair/replace and repairs may be less costly on the 540i overall.

I don't especially need a crotch rocket for where I drive, and the notion of getting 700 miles per tankful is appealing.

The 740i is no more or less reliable than the 540i (in the 1999 - 2001 models, anyway). Same engine, very similar electronics and mechanics (and the same parts are used in both cars and both break at the same rate). By 2001, the 740i had almost all the bugs out since it was the last year of that particular model. I'd stay far far away from the 2002 and 2003 7-series, when they re-did the body style and introduced new electronics. $15k - $20k is way over the mark for a nice one, by the way. I tend to think you can find an extremely nice, clean, and well-maintained 740i for no more than $15k. PM me if you want, as I just traded mine in and was watching prices for a while.

Well 15 is for a 01 740i in excellent condition with low miles. This is according to KBB. An 03 540i in excellent shape is more around 17. And these are dealer prices. I've never driven the 7 but my buddy has an E39 wagon with the V6 and it drives great. He beats the crap out of it too so I know they hold up well. I'm just deciding which body I like better. And I'll just keep an eye out on ebay and cars.com until I find one I like.

Some nice ones pop up on Ebay, had my eye on this as a second car and would have pulled the trigger if it weren't for the automatic transmission:

jbreen, youre crazy for spending 30k on a car thats 9 years old and is not collectible in the slightest. you'll be bored of the car in a month or 2 and won't be able to sell it for a fraction of it's cost. get something newer for that price and dont do any mods, you'll be much happier when it comes time to sell it. or for near 55 cop a new CTS-V, american and crazy powerful for the new year.

Don't know how I didn't find this sooner but I'm in love. Jag XF. Car and Driver 2009 top 10 list and the 2010 is even better with the 5.0 V8. Seems like a great value to price ratio. Just trying to find out more about the reliability of these.

a buddy of mine has one. Beautiful interior (except the weird gear shifter), but I could never really get past the ugly exterior.
