I need to join a club/organization in NYC. any ideas? - Page 2

Adding a single club/organization to your resume will have little impact on admissions, particularly if there are no related activities/accomplishments that result from it or seem in accord with it. If you want to join a club because of potential social connections, you might want to consider your University club or similar social association.

I run an "Ultimate Surrender" wrestling club in NYC. You'll network with other NYC MBA's, politicians and philanthropy types and get some great excercise in but whatever you do, do not lose any of your wrestling matches.

Harvard or Princeton are your choices?

Well, what do all the blue bloods in the Northeast like to do in their spare time? Rowing, tennis, hating Jews, etc. Plenty of options for you. Looks better on an application to an Ivy than helping poor kids.

You've had five years of college. If you've run into any philanthropic causes you've gravitated toward, focus your volunteer work on those causes. And don't worry about what looks best on an application. With that said, international experience with organizations such as the Peace Corps etc generally are the most impressive.

If you're applying in a year or less then forget joining an organization and just be stellar at what you do. I worked in admissions at an Ivy graduate school last semester and it's amazing how few people realize that admissions committee's can see through the BS. It really doesn't matter if you join an organization, that's not really impressive to admissions committees. Taking on leadership opportunities is what is most impressive or starting your own thing based around something you are passionate about. Joining an organization a year before submitting an application is not the way to go.

there's got to be something like this in NY: http://www.cabpc.org/main/find-your-cause If not, you should start it. I know people who skipped straight to board member status upon joining their respective cause, but they had impressive credentials like Penn + Kellogg degrees, etc. I'd also encourage you to look a U of Chicago as a backup for Harvard & Princeton. I hear pretty good things.

plus being around midwesterners makes you nicer eventually... edit: one of the best orgs i've joined here in NYC is the NYRR. you run races and can even help out on races. plus all the races have some sort of cause you can look into... plus you get into shape because of all the runs... you can make a whole thing about learning about yourself for your qualification into the NYC marathon ect... the universities (and big companies even more so) eat that stuff up.
