I'm thinking about heading to Montreal the 24th through the 27th for a last minute trip with the wife. She hasn't been there and I love it. It isn't a bad drive from NYC and we just want to get out for a few days.

Any advice on hotels? Restaurants?

I'd like to keep the hotel around $250 a night.

Hi Chas Don't know for Hotel, but for restaurant, you want to go to "Au Pied de Cochon" and "Le club chasse et peche". On another palate, you could try Pintxo, great tapas to have there, and a good choice of Xeres For lunch you could try le marche 27who serves some very good tartare. For the no-go, I would say don't get fooled by "Le poid penche", near Ogilvy, nice appearance, but the food is bland and overpriced. -

Mr. Steerburger on St. Catherine near Rue Peel.... ahaha you will love it.
You can possibly even get a delicious chili dog to go, and head up to either strip club next door.

Montreal <333

edit:
and actually for the cheapest most delicious breakfast up there go to "The Turf" and get the breakfast of champions. as you can tell I appreciate the finer things in life, which mostly include diner breakfast with extra sausage.

When I was there last (20 years ago now) I recall that Montreal had some of the best tittie bars.

i wish i was a true expert on the subject but overall i haven't been to enough shake joints to compare. the girls were definitely slamming but the 2 places i went were a bit weird.. basically a packed house with folding chairs set up in front of the stages.

what i can say is i spent most of my time chatting up women on st. catherine street around 5-6pm as this turned out to be the time when the strippers were changing shifts.

Montreal Old city (a few streets that remain) is a good destination for bars and restaurants.
I would catch a flight to Havana Cuba on my second day.

Biddle's club is now called House of Jazz (actu-link) Still same owner, so it should be exactly the same as it was, I need to try it someday

I've gone every year for the past several years. It all kind of depends what you want...

There are basically 3 areas worth checking out, all near each other and none so awesome that you can't miss it:

(1) Old city, which is cute, more touristy, vaguely European looking and romantic -- in NYC terms kind of cross between Tribeca, Wall Street and the West Village (weird, huh?). This area is best if you want a cozy, romantic vacation.

(2) Downtown, which looks like a generally smaller yet lively downtown in the US (think Philly or DC). This area is best if you want a busier, city-oriented vacation and to avoid the cold outside as it has a series of underground malls.

(3) Le Plateau/Mile End area, which is the area that Montrealers tend to go out more and live on the weekends -- in NYC terms kind of like Village-Soho-LES. This area is best if you want real Montreal night-life, etc.

Since it'll be COLD, you may not travel between the areas all that much.

Hotels: in old city, I've stayed at St. Sulpice and Place d'Armes and recommend both (St. Sulpice is better), but there are several hotels in this area that are supposedly great -- Nelligan, Gault, St. Paul, St. James, Intercontinental, Le Petit, etc. Downtown has the usual chains, as well as some well known boutiques (Le Germain, Crystal). Close to Le Plateau, I've stayed at the Hyatt and Opus.

For eating, I concur on the Au Pied du Cochon recommendation, but Montrealers often take the entire Christmas - New Years period off, so I would check well in advance and reserve if you can. Other good ones include Joe Beef, Le Chronique, and Le Club au Chasse et Peche. I think L'Express and Pintxo are passable, but not particularly worth seeking out.

For hotel suggestions I'd say the Sofitel.

Sofitel is fine but "cold"...however, if you don't mind staying a bit farther away from downtown(in the old mtl), I only heard good thing about the Nelligan.

Mr. Mangoo, I never tried La Chronique, how does it compare to le Club?
