Is classical music better for the soul?

I always feel exhausted after listening to a couple of Beethoven symphonies and have to stick on something silly like 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull afterwards to chill out.

Handel and Bach do not have the same effect, however, I usually feel all relaxed and lovely afterwards.

By 'classical music' I mean the baroque period and the classical period, oh and a bit of Elgar.

Classical music calms me.

Beethoven's Sixth is pretty calming. At least most of the movements are.

Sometimes the soul wants what it wants. Maybe it's Beethoven, maybe Tchaikovsky, maybe Minor Threat.

Something to consider, but I think that unless you have good speakers and acoustics, and depending on the recording, even if you have good speakers, classical can get tiring to listen to. The harshness caused by overly pronounced sound in the high frequencies will cause fatigue to set in. Depending on how bad your situation is, it can even be painful. Cheap speakers often have horrible performance in this area. Modern music tends to place much less emphasis on that range of the audible spectrum, and much more in the bass and mid-range. It makes it easier to listen to on cheap gear and in the car (nowhere is a lousy tweeter more painful imo). Ignoring this, yes, classical music is better for the soul, though I really love the romantic era, which you have excluded.
