Son Volt > Wilco - Page 2

Obviously I'm a huge, lifelong SV fan.

In this regard, I highly recommend the Jay Farrar/Ben Gibbard album ONE FAST MOVE OR I'M GONE: Music From Kerouac's Big Sur. A tuneful album written predominantly by Jay which is very much in the same vain of his solo albums.

While I like SV's vibe, I do not like lyrics nearly as much as I like Wilcos.

I just heard Kasey Chambers doing a lovely cover of Tear Stained Eye.

Wilco is lovely on vinyl or maybe that's the cartridge talking.

Just get Uncle Tupelo's "Anodyne" remastered. Great, great album. Nice to hear a band with more than one lead singer.

Who the fuck can shit about Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?

I think some people are waaayyy overrating uncle tupelo. I mean, i really love some of their songs and even anondyne and march 13 xxxxx are good but honestly none are truly great imo. If uncle tupelo stayed around a bit longer then maybe they would've made that ultimate album of theirs but they always kind of remain a unfinished band in my eyes. I mean, heatmiser had some good songs and the 2 lead singers thing as well. A different vibe than elliott smith solo stuff but overall heatmiser is just short of being a great band. Still had some good songs and 2 of their albums i'd recommend as solid

You know, this thread made me give YHF another chance, as it actually didn't do much for me when it first came out. Been on heavy rotation for the last few weeks. Glad I re-listened...great record.

I really don't understand why people like The uncle tupelo Stuff more than wilco.

It's really not that good. I mean, it was sorta groundbreaking for the alt-country genre as there wasn't much before them except for Gram Parsons and his many projects. Still, their songwriting is weak and unrefined. Not even raw in a good way, just a band that needed more work. As one of the first modern alt-country bands and what started wilco/son volt they're legendary, standing on their own they're really not that great and this is coming from someone who likes son volt/wilco/gram parsons alt country type stuff
