A Question of Scruples, Prime Rib Edition

Thread Starter
A woman I know was at a large grocery store this weekend.

Somehow, someway they had really screwed up when they weighed and packaged the prime rib. The pack she picked up was marked at 21 cents for a four-pound slab! Of course the distracted cashier just buzzed it through with the UPC code.

So:

1) what would you have done

and

2) Is she going to hell?

and

3) Should I feel guilty eating it?

I had a similar experience with an item I bought at Lowe's. I ordered online for in-store pickup. When I got to the store the item didn't look right, but it looked close enough for me, and the cashier wasn't worried. I got home and discovered that the item they'd given me was worth about five times as much as they'd charged me (I paid ~$40, it was worth a little more than $200). I called the manager and explained, and he told me not to worry about it. Apparently they were selling that item for $40. I still think they made a mistake somewhere, but he didn't care, so I don't care. So, to answer question #1: I would probably have mentioned it. Though it was really torn (it was a pretty sweet upgrade), I ultimately decided it was the right thing to do.

As for the second, I don't think she did anything wrong, per se. She didn't deceive anyone, and it was the store's mistake. I don't think there's a clear-cut right or wrong, but I would have erred on the side of mentioning it.

To answer the third question, I'm pretty sure you're OK eating it. I mean, what she did is a grey area. The question as to whether it's a crime to let delicious steak go to waste? I don't even think there is a question. Someone has to eat that steak, and it should be you.

Customer is always right.

I've had this happen to me before and I have always told the cashier that they aren't charging me the correct amount.

This is like how Best Buy mislabeled 56" flat screens for $10 each and I bought three. I wouldn't have felt bad if I actually got them though. I would have mentioned it though.

I generally just ask "how much is this?" and see if they think it is a mistake.

1. Nothing, since you/they did not intentionally slap that tag on it

2. I hope not

3. Hell No. Its a Christmas gift.

Costco used to accidently misprice their beef from time to time and we load up. The price is usually $9.99lb but its marked as $3.99lb.

Everyone grabs it. I see it as smart and diligent shopping.
