Agree about the city - there is so much to see in Florence, from Ugolini and Liverano and (to a lesser extent) Seminara to wonderful art. I lived there for about 8 months and had a fantastic time. If you like Renaissance art, do look beyond the Uffizzi, Pitti and the Duomo to some of the smaller churches. There are beautiful frescos in the Chiesa San Marco (at Piazza San Marco near the heart of town) and countless other churches hold masterworks. In addition, the eating there is fantastic. It's been a while since I was there, and I was a student, but if I hear correctly, one can still get a good meal at Cibreo, Alle Murate, and Giovanni Latini (not the main Latini resto, which is a bit over-touristed). And do have a gelato - there's good stuff in Santa Croce in the Oltrarno, which I highly recommend for walking about. Have fun!!
