Do you need silence to sleep?

Do you need music playing? White noise? Waves crashing on a beach? Or are you one of those people who can't sleep unless everything is quiet?

Crossposting with Facebook, Slim? OK... My answer there pasted over: I like having the TV on actually. I don't know why...music keeps me awake though...my head sings along and I can't drift off. The dialog on TV however is generally so mindless that it shuts my brain down I guess

I don't neeed silence but I need darkness.

Depends on how tired/drunk I am. If it's just a regular night, I'm sensitive to the quietest of noises. But if I've been putting in 12 hrs/day for days on end, I'd sleep through pretty much anything short of an earthquake. Darkness is more important to me than silence.

+1

I'll add that I need a flat surface to sleep on, thus why I cannot sleep on planes. I'm such a finicky sleeper..

growing up and throughout highschool I'd find that I couldn't get to sleep unless I did a bit of reading, even 5-10 minutes would do. Now, I find that music has the same effect. I put on my favourite song and I'm asleep by the time it's done 90% of the time.

I sleep like a baby. I fall asleep in taxis on trips, I fall asleep on airplanes before we take off. I used to fall asleep on military planes before jumps and in helicopters on the way to missions.

Yes, a fan or another source of covering outside noice will also suffice in a pinch. When I am a bit sleep deprived, I have no problem falling asleep on trains, planes, airports, etc. but that usually comes later in my trips (and I tend to drool during these naps as well)

Either. I can sleep in noise or in quiet, in light or in dark, it doesn't matter. I answered the poll question that says I need background noise, but that's not really true. I don't need it and don't usually have it, but if it's there it doesn't bother me. An uncomfortable bed can sometimes be a problem though. I went through a phase where I couldn't sleep the first night in any bed that wasn't my own (hotels, relatives' homes, etc.) but then slept fine on subsequent nights. That seems to have passed. After my divorce it took about a month before I could sleep at all without taking Ambien. That definitely has passed.

Sleep anywhere, anytime. In the train, in the airplane (no matter if business or economy), at work, in a club, ...
I prefer to sleep when it's dark. Noise on the other hand is no problem, let it be music or something else. Actually I can't sleep at the beach without music because the constant yelling around me keeps me distracted.

I need silence sometimes. But I have earplugs so it doesn't matter.

You sound sleep deprived. Seriously - do you ever feel at risk of falling asleep at the wheel?
