23" monitor, now what?

I've just upgraded from a 19" monitor to a 23" monitor. Everything just seems so expansive. I'm running it at 1920x1080. Should I go for a lower resolution? It takes a lot of effort to move the mouse from one part of the screen to another now.

Is it just too big?

I used to play WoW attached to my 55" Bravia and home stereo system. Call in sick to work, wife gone to work, bottle of whisky...ahhh, good times. Congrats on the new monitor! Amazing how prices are coming down, no?

If you're using Windows, go into Control Panel and adjust your mouse sensitivity. Also turn mouse accelleration on (try the lowest setting first), if it's not already.

Yeah, a 23" Acer for 140 bones (!) from Best Buy. (I tend to buy shit I don't need after a few tumblers of scotch at 3am, and those damn shopaholics at slickdeals.) It's better than the 6-month old Dell it replaces and comes with all kinds of gizmos (1080 HD, DVI, HDMI, etc.). I think the problem is I'm sitting 24" in front of it. My eyes have to move a lot more than before and, frankly, I was actually quite satisfied with the 19" piece of real estate.

I have a Logitech gaming-grade mouse. I can adjust sensitivity on the fly. But, one is too fast and the other isn't enough.

Don't change the resolution, LCD monitors can't scale resolutions like an old CRT (ie, everything will look blurry). Windows has "large font" and other settings that work decently if you need it. Windows 7 is pretty good at this.

You'll get used to the real estate fast.

Non-native resolutions look bad on LCDs. Try adjusting the mouse speed in the mouse control panel in addition to the Logitec controls. I have a Razer which has 20 sensitivity settings. I'm at 7.5 for daily use on a 22" 1680x1050. You can also lift the mouse to move it further, rather than moving your hand.

I'd need a bigger desk. Actually, I'd need a bigger apartment since it doesn't have enough room for a bigger desk. Damn, I'd need to get a bigtimerjob, a la Piobaire, so I could afford a bigger apartment.

This /\\ . Non native resolutions tend to look worse on LCD monitors. 23" is not too big. In a few days, you're going to wonder: " could I fit a bigger monitor here?" Assuming you're running Windows XP, another option you may want to adjust in the Control Panel is under "Mouse" --> "Pointer Options"-->"Motion" -->"Select a pointer speed".

Bigtimers don't need jobs. I need my job.

Left 4 Dead looks pretty good on my 28inch. Also, with extra screen real estate, it's a lot easier to do work requiring multiple windows open (Word + firefox, etc)
