Changes to B&S discussion - SOLD BUMPS ARE BANNED

A while back we had a long threak about what is and is not ok here in the FS forum.

Sellers were given the ok to bump their threads when something from it was sold.

I personally never liked this because I felt it had no point. I think that FS should be announcing something is available, rather than something is no longer available.

It seems this is being used regularly as a means to just get your thread to the top again, and not as a means to inform buyers. Most sellers mark a (SOLD) next to an item when it sells, why does it also need announcing in a bump?

The other reason this should be banned is because someone that just wants to sell a single item get little chance to have their thread seen. Threads get moves from the front page too fast. Fundamentally longer threads get more opportunities to keep their thread at the top with "SOLD bumps". This is unfair to smaller threads.

My sense is that we need an adjustment to the policy here and ban the "SOLD bumps", they are unnecessary because:

  • It makes sense to me that a NEW thread should get more time on the front page
  • The sold marker should be on the item within the thread, its redundant to "announce" something sold

I've included a poal to get a sense of what the community thinks.

**EDIT: my intention here is to question the practice of on bumping the thread only when something sells, not to announce a price drop, and then mention that XYZ are sold

A while ago I had several of my threads locked for sold bumps so since then I stopped using them. It seems however that people still use them very frequently so I don't know if it is or isn't allowed.

No - don't ban - when there are still other items in the thread for sale. Yes - ban them - when its informational only.

I personally hate them and never use them - without a price drop on remaining stuff.
What help does it do tell people an item is no longer available?

Agreed.

I agree - I actually did it yesterday and I felt terrible after I clicked the button. Its a dick move to do when theres nothing else in your thread. I agree with whusurdadi - if you drop a price, then you can announce updated sold, but just saying SOLD, naw. That sucks when you are the last one on the front page and you get moved to page 2 for something unwarranted like that. Great poal.

I agree that sold bumps are pretty awful and should be banned, with the hope that an alternative doesn't become high-volume sellers then starting many many threads each selling a couple of items. Shouldn't there be a limit to the number of threads that a seller can have in each forum? A parallel to the sold bump is the update bump. Updates on measurements, better pics, even new items can be manipulated and used unfairly. Honestly without public and clear rulings (i.e. marking when a sold bump locks a thread), confusion will still reign, since you never know if that poster bumping for measly alterations is getting his dues or not.

^^ responding to the comments above, I am adjusting the poal.

My intention all along was to question the practice only to announce something is sold, not along with other information.

I've actually not purchased an item because I was so annoyed the seller uses the "Item #4 Sold!" tactic. It's obnoxious and rude.

You won't receive PMs anymore of people asking about the item?..

You can update the original post to tell them it sold. You don't need to bump it up. I was under the impression that Sold bumps were banned. If that's the case then we should start reporting the violating posters. Some may consider that a dick move, but at least its a dick move within the rules.

I've been guilty, but have stopped doing it without price drops as well. I think bumps should ONLY be allowed for price drops and they must be transparent, i.e. a clear history of pricing.

100% agree.
