How is the recession playing out in your neck of the woods ? - Page 3

I live in Rockridge, Oakland. That said, some people have changed their weekday wine from 80 to 60 dollars.

I live near one of the top ten recession-proof cities and work as a tenured professor, so I'm not in danger of losing my job. However, state tax collections are down every quarter and we've had a 4% budget cut, followed by 7%. Since the university has decided not to fire faculty or staff and the largest remaining portion of our department's budget is TA salaries, our grad student population is way down and we're probably facing furloughs (basically unpaid, forced vacation days) next academic year. Federal grant money for research is also harder to get and we won't be allowed to supplement our salaries with grant funding in the event of furloughs. In short, we're doing more work with fewer resources and probably facing what is effectively a temporary pay cut, but unlike many colleagues in industry, I at least have a job.

April is when the company I work for gives out raises and bonuses. The last April, there were none and there were a few layoffs in an unrelated department. I'm expecting about the same in 2011, especially since there already was no company-sponsored holiday party this year.

As rnoldh said, Houston is a pretty easy city to live in, especially with the salary that I am still getting. Still, I have cut back on most extravagant expenses (for my own personal definition of extravagant).

It is really sucking. One thing I don't get is some places are raising prices. I don't get it. Other places are lowering prices. That I get. I think they need the money but that is the wrong thing to do in a time like this.

Berkeley Hills, here. I'm still at 120 for the weekday ... 200 for weekend.

That said ... my annual "case of Scotch" Christmas present was down a level this year. But the one doing the "gifting" lives in Atlanta.
