How is the recession playing out in your neck of the woods
(and in your socioeconomic stratum)

If so, what are you seeing?
Layoffs? Paycuts? Lower bonus?
For business owners, sales/revenues down?

And for whom?
For you? friends? family?

How are they reacting?
Optimism? Denial? Fear? Loathing?

My city was recently on the Forbes' list of the top 10 poorest cities in America. So yeah.

Flint?

Nope, Saginaw. Kind of sad that there was more than one option from the list I could've been talking about, isn't it?

Just a wild guess, but there might be 10.

How many of these do you want to see in one post?

I was referring to Michigan options. You see, because HelloIDistance noted my location and surmised I was talking about Flint in my first post.

Nice snark attempt, though.

I thought he meant all 10 could be in Michigan. Probably not the case but it wouldn't surprise me.

Yeah I was talking about one of the two Michigan locations haha. I'm surprised Detroit wasn't listed as well.

My town is a military town, so it hasn't been affected too much, there's still new construction going up (although all the new housing developments were abandoned, and a certain amount of foreclosures). On the other hand, any significant decrease in military funding would devastate the town even in a good economy...

Indiana continues to fail to meet monthly revenue projections which means eventual cuts in services, education, etc.

Laugh all you want, but North Dakota is doing just fine.

How do you tell the difference?

Personally, it's been effecting me quite a bit recently. I'm in college and used to sell used cars part time, everything was ok(I was making $200-$300 every weekend, enough for my current needs), I saved up for a month or two and went to India for 6 weeks over the summer. While I was gone, Cash for Clunkers pretty much wiped out business for a month. When I came back I still had the choice to continue work, but the dealership was about an hour away and commuting costs would have meant making next to nothing for 2 days of work. So I got a job at the Gap, I was expecting to work about 20 hours a week but I've only been working about 5 hrs. Just enough to pay for gas and food. Luckily I live at home and my college tuition is taken care of, however, I've been bumming money from my parents for the past few months, and it sucks. I kept on applying to jobs but didn't have any luck until last week where I got a job at selling sunglasses in the mall. I was reccomended for the job by a friend of the manager so he said he would guarantee me 20 hours and I have an option for more. Hopefully this works out, because I like more one on one customer contact and need to make money again. Anyway, the lack of money has lead to me spending less or no money on going out to parties or eating out, or buying clothes. It's at a point where I miss friends' parties because I don't want to ask my parents for $20 for the nights expenses(gas+food).
