My advice: get her to watch the movie "blood diamond" with you then talk about how sad it was for the next few weeks

Hopefully will soften her up, she might even say she doesnt want a diamond anymore

I just asked my now wife what she wanted, searched for options in my budget range and gave her the final pick

other than missing the surprise factor its a win-win

several of her friends have commented that they'd wish they'd done that

Yes

If you get vintage make sure you get the stone set right. My wife went to an amusement park last week and lost a 0.6ct diamond ffffuuuu.gif

Yea we went to the diamond district and bought it together. Not really romantic but that kind of pragmatism is just how we roll

Kind of the same, I picked up 2 sapphires and she chose the one she wanted.
We already knew we were getting married so it wasn't a matter of surprising her, so she said she wanted a blue a sapphire.
Fuck, I guess we're all lucky that our wives saved us all the hassle and just told is what they wanted.

The now wife had no say in the engagement ring process. I did a few months of research on Pricescope.com, the SF of diamonds. Knew exactly what I wanted (three stone with pear sides) but no B&M shop had the style I wanted. Purchased everything online at a trusted jewelry site with no regrets.

My advise:
1) look for stone that is 'eye clean' from 4-6 inches. I could give a damn if you can see an imperfection with a scope. Can I see it with my eyes? Choosing a lower clarity but still 'eye clean' will save $$$.
2) sometimes some stones have weird characteristics that are never actually seen. My wife's stone glows blue under a black light. Very unique but it even saves a little $$$.
3) making jumps at the popular carat sizes jacks prices up. Compare an identical stone in .98ct vs 1.01ct and the latter will be exceedingly more expensive.
4) go see diamonds in person and see what the lowest color you can get without yellow tint. J is risky but H or I are usually safe bets.

Has anyone tried Levi's 541, and if so do they really have more room in the seat/thigh than 514s?

Got hooked up by my cousin! @Stitches I believe that's his handle runs a diamond business. PM him for info. He tried to hook me up (a decent price) but my hook up was better deal (family prices). lol

+1

Also, personally, I didn't have a problem figuring out what my (then) girlfriend liked and disliked style-wise. Especially if you are of the age where your friends are getting engaged, its easy to get her talking about what she thinks of other people's rings without letting her know that you are shopping for one.

So there's an IFBB Pro at the Y I go to, and today this 18 year old kid walks up to him says "you look really toned". I don't know if it was the most epic troll I've ever witnessed or if he was just clueless, but the look on the Pro's face after he said it was one of complete devastation.

That's amazing.

I really wish you had a video.
