RE: CFA

I took level 1 in december 2012, passed.  Taking level 2 in about two weeks (June 7th). I needed about 200 hours of studying, the material is not difficult but there is a wide range.  More important in my opinion is getting used to the format/style of questions they ask you.  Its all multiple choice, with 3 possible answers, sounds easy, but its not.  Also, its not like you need to hit 70% to pass, its a moving average based on how people respond.

There's zero chance it can hurt you, and will definitely be appreciated if you are looking to move to PE/Equity Research/other ventures later.  It's not worth as much as an MBA, but its WAY cheaper.  If you want to make a career on the sell side, its probably not going to do much for you, but you had mentioned you wanted to move to buy side.

Details: Exam is like 1000$, most employers will reimburse you and pay for study materials.  I like Schweser.  Its about another $500-$1000 if you are paying out of pocket though.  Read through materials from CFA institute once then crush practice tests, you will be good to go.

any other questions, pm me.

Talking about alcohol.

Got pretty wasted last night after work. Sexual innuendo all night from GM, she also has the fattest ass, nicest ass. I keep telling her i'ma fuck it.

Must have been pretty serious about it in my mind, cause when we got back to her place I passed the fuck out fully dressed before she was out of the shower, but on the bedside table I neatly arranged the condoms and tub of fucking vaseline I bought at the deli right before hahahahaha

Yeah the material isn't necessarily difficult, it's just that they ask you very specific questions over such a large amount of material that's tough. I remember there were two paragraphs in one of the volumes dedicated to discussing the GAAP/IFRS rules for software development companies expensing development costs. As I was reading it I pondered that it'd be pretty funny if they asked a question about it. Sure enough, when I took the test there was a question on it and I got it right just because I remembered the material because of how silly I thought it was.

CFA is useless in PE, though, but it's probably helpful if you're planning on HF exit opps

so I bounced at a club tonight, it was a party for some highschoolers graduating. holy shit, our future is fucked. kids look like little justin beibers getting fucking hammered and fucking in toilets then zombie-walking around blackout drunk. Also outside some little mexican guy stopped me and was like "Holy shit, you're like a big version of me!" before getting pulled back by some girl he was having an argument with. lol

also did my first BJJ class (no gi) today in 3 years. lower back sore as FUCK. cardio endurance not as bad as I thought it might be. (still bad tho)

This isn't true, almost every associate I deal with at brand name funds has CFA at least partially completed.  Its useful for all asset management gigs.

Did you take the exam?

One of my friends got an internship at a PE fund, not a sick one like blackstone or carlyle, I've never heard of it, but I'm kind of jelly. Don't know if thats better then bulge bracket IB.

I took and passed level 1 when I thought I wanted to go into investment management. My firm partners have heard of the CFA but had no idea what it really was, and I haven't met anyone in PE that has had it. Probably because most people come from banking where nobody cares about it, and in fact in many cases are discouraged from spending time on it.
