I hear ya. My coach told me I have to do slow down, pause, fast up on all my squats. Not looking forward to that, current 10 rep PR was 275. Hoping I don't have to break it down to 185 to do that, although he said weight doesn't matter.
If you don't know what weight to use, think of it in terms of RPEs. I guess the goal is to teach you better form so a @8 where every rep is perfect seems reasonable.
For instance, I use 50% of my squat 1RM on my 4x4 pin squats with 8 sec negative. Sounds easy but its the worst lift I know of.
