I do this.
If you're gonna do it, make sure you eat an even bigger surplus on workout days than if you wouldn't calorie cycle.
The typical weight gain during bulking is 1 pound a week, 3500 calorie surplus weekly.
If you don't calorie cycle, it's gonna be 500 cals surplus every day.
4 split, its gonna be 875 calories on workout days.
... 3 split .... 1170 calorie surplus.
The theory behind it is that you will utilize the increased surplus on workout days for building more muscle, while you don't need that surplus on rest days.
I don't really agree with this since a bigger surplus leads to more fat gain and you will recover better on your rest days if you are in a surplus those days. I only do this for the psychological reasons, such as having a huge meal to look forward to after training, plus I find it helps to keep my appetite up and not having to constantly shove in food every day.

If you're busting your ass in the gym, you don't really need to worry about getting excessively fat, just a little fluffy. Then when you cut with more LBM than before, it'll be a piece of cake.
