my assistance is in the 8-12 range. I try and up each set by one rep and once i can do 12 and then i raise the weight by 5 lbs and drop the reps to 8.

it's worked out alright so far. It isn't that fast and sometimes i'm kinda gassed and can't do the extra rep, but it sets you up for steady progress.

In other news, I'm loving this push/pull split. I feel like each workout leaves me totally gassed.

i got my first bicep pump ever today, did 3 different curls with 60 second rests. Was hanging out in the cable pully section of the gym and everyone was like wtf you doing over here get back to the power rack.

Yeah, this is what I do... 6-8, 8-12, 12-16, 16-20, depending on the movement, and then upping to the next weight and resetting at the bottom of the rep range. Sometimes I get more reps, sometimes I don't, but in the long run I always make consistent progress with my assistance lifts. I don't see any reason for people to not do this.

That is pretty good. I set mine between 6 - 10 based on the SPBR outline. I usually find 6 okay, 8 good, and 10 grinding it out.
FWIW my shoulder press was shit Jan - April, then suddenly shot back up to my usual after working at it again. Felt good.

This is probably a given but it is worth noting that as the weight goes up, your form may slump a bit, but so as long as you keep your form correct the increase in weight should actually be EASIER than you had initially thought, IME. It is all in the head in how you prepare yourself and keep focus. Been working a lot on form as my lifts fluctuate as well as slowing down the pace so to keep greater balance and control.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Of course I take everything I read with a grain of salt and listen to my own body as well.

I just wanted to know whether or not it was required for assistance lifts to go up in the same fashion as the big 3. Sometimes i'll be able to bust out curls for 3x12 at 45, sometimes i'll have to do 35.

But yeah, got the answer(s)I was looking for, thanks dudes

I've been running out of gym music, so on a whim, I googled Amon Amarth to see if they had any new stuff coming out. New album releases tomorrow icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif what great timing.

Dissection? They're sorta like Amon Amarth.

I listen to really fucking heavy shit at the gym, though. Think I posted this a few times:

This is the song I squat to:

i'm not so much big on really heavy stuff or the genre as a whole as i am on nerdy stuff. movie soundtracks, viking metal, random christian metalcore bands, etc. are what i've been listening to lately. little things like timbre, certain tones and production value can completely turn me on or off of certain music... i can really dig a bands breakdowns or hooks or something but there's usually a cheesy synth or terrible vocals that turn me right off.

Yeah, i'm really not understand his hate. I really think it's simply amazing. Every song on the tracklist after New Slaves is pure sick shit.

i think the haters are a very vocal minority--the critics all love it. (p4k gave it a 9.4, it has a metacritic score of 85).

more traditional rap fans might be disappointed but not only is the record super creative, it also totally bangs.

like, even if it's not your thing you have to give ye props for making an entire album of angry minimalist industrial/acid house rap songs, especially after the pop maxiimalism of Dark Fantasy. "first you make em like you and then you make 'em unlike you/cause kissin people's ass is so unlike you." and like, nobody is making music the way yeezus sounds except for maybe death grips, and even death grips isn't the same (it's much more dissonant/hard to listen to).

Kanye is one of the very few mainstream acts I can get down to. I have loved everything after and including 808s

never listen to music while i lift, if i did it'd be classical though. the dynamic range of a full orchestra is unmatched.
