Maya sounds nicer and seems like it's more ethnically neutral

I like Maya personally.

I don't mean to add more confusion or doubt but what are your thoughts on Sonia?

Names cycle in popularity, Maya has been pretty prominent the last few years. My wife has been into having "baby play-dates" a bunch and I've run into 3 Mayas and a few of it's variations. Taya, Skaya, etc...All middle-class white kids.

come on, this is SF. you should name her Sartoria Partenopea on a serious note, my sister named my niece Annika. i didn't like it at first but it has grown on me. but Maya is much better, i'd go for that.

We've considered Sonia, but we have some friends/relatives with the name and consider it used up. It is an excellent cross-cultural name though.

2. I would stay away from anything too ethnic for a first name

3. with my kids, we gave them somewhat ethnic names, and then very whitebread middle names. I would suggest the same, it gives them the option of being A. Janet Corleone as opposed to Anika Corleone. give your kid options.

4. I like a goddess who wears a skull necklace as much as anybody

We are about 90% settled on names for our first boy, due in early April. First name is be fairly trad and middle name is from a close friend who's name is Portuguese.

Maya just because 2012 is so close...

My vote is for Anika. I don't know too many people with that name so that adds to it.
