out of the brands you mentioned I wear:
-Lacoste....i think there are a couple different fit styles, one slimmer and one fuller. I have a grey/black striped polo that fits slim and I've had no issues with the quality. Color choices are huge so everycolor you'd want is available, except for the one color I was looking for...burnt orange
-Penguin....I have 4 of the "Earls" which are the only polos I like from them. They fit very slim so you might even want to size up one depending on how fitted you like your shirts. Quality is so-so, it's better now that it's 100% cotton since the first Earls were cotton/poly blend
-Paul Smith....The fabric on mine is really nice, light gray with burgundy and teal dotted stripes throughout. His store has a lot of different polo designs but are on the pricey side at $100
But half the polos in my closet are all Fred Perry, which is my go-to polo shirt.

Right now is the perfect time to purchase a couple Ralph Lauren Purple Label polos.. I just purchased 4 - light blue, black, pink, and lilac. They are awesome in regards to material / look, and.. I dunno about fit, you might end up in a medium or small. They are relatively full shirts but they look better than any other polos I've seen - they have almost a sharkskin sheen but they're 100% cotton.
On sale - 99 - regular price - 165.

How do the RL polo's hold up after washings? The biggest issue I have had with polos in general, is their inability to maintain their shape (especially the collars) and their overall color after going through the wash. I am definetely going to try a couple of the RL Polo custom fit polo's for the summer. RL certainly has an abundance of colors to choose from. I am guessing I would be a small in the custom fit, since I wear a 36R in suits.

The collar is fine. Mine did shrink about 1" in length in a hot wash. But I generally buy a bit larger, then hot wash before wearing to eliminate the shrinkage problem. I currently have 2 RL Custom Fit and some older RL polos. The darker colors will fade noticeably after about 10 washes, which I don't mind one bit because a well worn polo looks 10x better with jeans. The lighter colors can go for a bit longer before you see fading. So far of all the polos I've tried, only the Brooks Brothers have held their colors well after numerous washes. BB carries a slim fit version as well, but the sleeves are a bit longer than RL or Lacoste.

Hi everyone. I currently wear polos in most casual settings and on some days to work. Right now I'd like to expand my current wardrobe but I want to stay away from brands that are mainstream(-ish) where I'm from and get the best possible prices.
Currently, all of my polos are A&F and AllSaints SpitalField.
I like the look of AllSaints because the collars look different from generic polos.
I like the A&F because the material is pretty rugged and thick.
I want to avoid Ralph Lauren and Lacoste.
Any advice?

Why avoid mainstream if they are great. That's like saying living is too mainstream so I'm going to be dead.
The best Polo I have ever worn is the Ralph Lauren Polo, in terms of quality, durability, and overall fit.
I've tried the rest and there is always something that makes it a no-deal.
Anyway, you asked for advice, that's mine..
