What's the word on Duffel Coats? - Page 2

Although the Gloverall offering may be considered the definitive classic, none the less, you did very well.

Your's is far and away more classic than any American copies being sold now,...

I have a Gloverall that was marketed through J.Press. It was originally around $750 (lol) and eventually dropped to around $200, so I picked it up. It's a charcoal outside with dark red and navy plaid lining. Overall it's a fine coat, size down for a decent fit. Don't expect it to be that warm though, I wear a down jacket underneath it to keep the heat in. The coat is basically a wind-stopping, water-repelling shell with hood. It's a really nice fall/early winter jacket, but I wouldn't recommend it for serious winter wear without an underliner.

Still waiting to see the TOJ one...

When I was still a student I tried on a Barbour duffle waxcoat in a very slim fit and in a gorgeous royal blue wax cotton that I have never seen in a store before and after that. It fitted me like a glove. I couldn't afford it.
Still think of it 5 years later. I have cashmere overcoats now, a great peacoat by montedoro, a couple of really cool jackets and some other stuff but this jacket is still on my mind.
I checked out barbours website but couldn't find it.

3sixteen, APC, and surface to air all have some really nice options.
Would be hype on a cheaper slim fitting option.

do the gloveralls fit boxy? anyway to size down for slimmer fit?

Spiewak makes a good, slim duffle coat that's pretty cheap – about $160 if you look hard enough.

+1 on the 3sixteen coat, it's awesome. Definitely the best out of those three.

For a cheaper option, we've got a good black one from Schott in stock. Nice and slim. I've got some photos - I can post them up later.

They can fit pretty boxy and I sized down on mine. However, and this should be obvious, keep in mind what you'll be wearing underneath. I often wear a lighter cotton jacket under mine and it gets pretty snug in the back and shoulders.

I got a great vintage Gloverall off eBay last winter. I like it because it doesn't have the big shiny patches where the toggles attach. I like the bone toggles, too. It looks like this:

I can't get over how fucking awesome the 3sixteen Duffle is. Honestly if I had the cash I'd go with it in a heartbeat over any of those other options.

I love duffle coats. I have been wearing my Gloverall a lot recently. I had troubles with the fit, I thought it was too boxy, and had sort of given up on it, but now that I wear a down vest under it, it looks much better. So far, this combination kept me really warm in Wisconsin weather. By the way, if you look at old pictures, English sailors were wearing theirs really big, with a ton of stuff layered underneath.

Quoted entirely for awesomeness:
