I was eating dinner with a friend the another night and the question came up: which celebrity chefs are also real chefs? Obviously someone like Gordon Ramsey is, but what about others? Morimoto, Bobby Flay, Anthony Bourdain?

Batali - a resounding yes Flay - yes, by trade, but he seems to be more of a restauranteur now. Bourdain - yes, but now takes to being an author and show presenter Morimoto - yes, have you ever seen the Japanese Iron Chef? Rachael Ray - no.

Bourdain was a working cook and chef for a very long time, but by his own account was at best a journeyman/not in the same league as a Batali or similar.

Favorite semi-celebrity chef is Eric Ripert. He seems like a bro.

I like Michael Chiarello. Got famous doing Napa food, went to Food Network, quit FN and came back to the Valley to open up another restaurant. Bottega is legit.

And obviously, Thomas Keller.

All the iron chefs are legit, but for me Morimoto is on another level from Flay. I don't like Flay's shows at all really, but his flavor profiles are quite good.

I caught a show, can't remember what season, of that one where they look for new personality chefs, like that Guy person. On this episode, Morimoto has showing knife skills and fish breakdown. I just remember him shaking his head in disgust at some of the contestants, mumbling, "No skills..."

As much as Emeril is annoying on TV, I hear he's a good guy and can actually cook. Even Bourdain now says this, after years of bashing him.

Symon...can't wait for April and to try his place!

It's a long time since Ramsay bothered to cook in any of his restaurants in the UK.

Couldn't agree more. He seems like a bit of a prick but his restaurants are great. He doesn't guild the lily too much. He is very good at balancing flavors and he knows what he is good at.

You think Cat Cora is legit?

one of my father's business associates is good friends with Bobby Flay. Apparently he's an awesome guy and nothing like the prick he comes across on tv (which he admitted was very odd how tv changes perception).

Heston Blumenthal...although he stretches the definition of celebrity a bit.

No.

Collichio cooks twice a month, himself, at Craft. Special menu, etc. I have never been, but I want to try it. Impossible to get a rez.

Flay does not strike me as a jerk on TV. Maybe I am the only one.
