I LOVE it. Practically grew up on it. Those who hate durian don't know what they're missing.

Oooo. This! I'd smelled my fair share of terrible, terrible durian, but my (Thai) mother-in-law scoffed and said there was non-nasty smelling delicious durian varieties, sort of like well....any fruit in the world (varieties, that is). Damn if she wasn't right. The good stuff is creamy and delicious like a pulpy custard, but fuck if I know how you can find it.

Had a local friend choose one for me in some Singapore back street and it was very nice. No nasty smell at all.

I've had both bad and good ones. The unripe ones definitely had the consistency of onions, but the best ripe ones I've had were like custard. I'm not kidding, it was like custard wrapped around a seed and quite sweet.

Used to find them repulsive as a kid when my relatives were digging in, but as an adult I really enjoy it and I don't notice the smell at all. Once you are actually eating it you can barely smell it for some reason. I have noticed that the more expensive variety (butter, mao shan wan, etc.) are well worth the premium as once you try the good stuff the normal ones just don't cut it. I have never gotten the onion relationship, think it is more like a foie gras custard taste/texture.

Oh the onion thing is not textural at all. Durian does have some sulphur compounds similar to those in onions/garlic etc, and a little whiff is reminiscent of them. ~ H
