Learning about suit materials

Thread Starter
I mentioned in an earlier thread that I will be spending some time in India and will be having a couple suits done.

Where can I learn about high end suit materials and obtain them before I head overseas? I am willing to pay shipping charges to have the material mailed to me, since I live in Virginia; doubt there are any major vendors here.

You can learn about and buy them in the fabric stores of NYC like Beckenstein's and Tip Top. Or by going through tailors' bolts and swatches, but they'll need to let you, and they don't often sell retail lengths. You can order swatches and cloth from Holland and Sherry's retail arm in London. The info is on their website.

its probably best if you look for a good local fabric store that supplies the 'name brands' and pick from there. as whoopee said, holland & sherry, and the other english and italian fabric houses.

Are you wishing to learn more about makers, or specific types of fabrics such as tweed, birdseye, flannel, etc?

Either way, I'm sure we can help you out.

I'm in India.. I've had pretty good experience getting my materials either at My tailor here in Sarogini Nagar Market or I go over the Shanker Market in Connaught Circus.. (Watch out in Shanker, they stamp a lot of material as Merino, Italian, etc..)

Raymond, Virmal, and Lord and Taylor seem to be the popular materials here,, at about 8-15 Dollars a yard..

I normally pay about 1500 ruppees for stiching ($38.00), Around Delhi and in the Diplomatic locations, the going rate is about 3000-4000. (Not worth it).

I could go on and on..

G. Luck..
