Apple Cider with Whiskey for the Holidays?

Hi... i need some help.

On Friday I am attending a holiday party at my friends house (girl i am trying to date). She asked me if i can bring some whiskey to put in the apple cider that they will have at the party.

Have you ever heard of mixing apple cider with whiskey?

if so... what type of whiskey would you suggest buying?

thanks very much

Hot toddys are made with hot water, honey, lemon juice and some whisk(e)y. Substituting apple cider for the first 3 ingredients should be fine (assuming the apple cider isn't too sweet). I'd probably use an inexpensive Irish whiskey. (They're a bit softer than their Scottish counterparts) Power's would be my choice (no more than $25 for a liter). That way you can throw some into the cider and save a bit to have neat for yourself.

I would use a moderately priced sweetish bourbon like Four Roses Small Batch, Woodford Reserve or Makers Mark.

I agree with ama. A bourbon would best complement the flavor of cider.

I'd use Calvados.

The obvious choice, but then she should have said brandy.

Though I suppose we pedants have to cut the majority of people some slack.

Well yeah. I don't even know if its pedantic, but I just think whisky+cider=bad. The gf probably just means 'brown booze' (I may be too harsh), so the dude should man up, and elegantly demonstrate his commitment to the quality of the final product. ~ H

Yeah, I've had it with apple brandy. Tasted fine, if sweet. But it will thump you good if you're not careful. You won't enjoy it as much when it's coming back up.

There are domestic options, too.

I mixed some hot cider w/ makers and it was great on a cold night (and it will get you tipsy if you're not careful)

You are probably right (i hate the friendzone).... Any way you slice it... will be a party full of attractive women so i want to make a nice impression.

Anyway... thanks for all the advice.

IF you think Bourbon or Brandy is a better choice.. then which one should i get? The ones mentioned above?

I think when she suggested whiskey, she did indeed mean "brown booze". She probably has no clue.

By brandy, we mean brandy made from apples, which is Calvados. But for a cheaper, easier to procure version, Laird's Applejack. ~ H
