I have had extensive whitening to counteract my "fluorosis" I have had ever since my childhood pediatritian recommended I take fluoride drops (doh!). I have undergone multiple bouts of "Zoom" in-chair, had custom trays, and used boxes upon boxes of Crest Professional Strength Strips. If you are unwilling to go the "sans coffee" route, start at the bottom of the 'Hydrogen Peroxide' tree and work your way up. I would ask your dentist for some trial Crest strips (vanilla, not professional) which have very little Hydrogen Peroxide in them. If you are unsatisfied after a week, try Pro Strength Crest out for size. If this doesn't work to your satisfaction (never mind drastic colour changing, your satisfaction should be your guide when to stop!), ask about trays. I currently use a tray once a year for maintainence. Trays come with Zoom whitening btw. If you decide to use Zoom, here's what they do/don't tell you. You sit in a chair and have a giant laser dry all of your teeth. Your lips are stretched wide by a mechanical device, and will later crack do to the inevitable laser "splash damage." When the laser has done its work, gel is put on your teeth like toothpaste on a tooth brush. Next, the gel is burned into your teeth, whitening the surface. This process takes 3 min/ tooth. After all your teeth are done, you are shown in the mirror the INSANE changes that have taken place. (My teeth were splotchy afterward, most likely due to my fluorosis, but I'm not sure if uneven 'paste burning' was to blame as well) They tell you that as your teeth rehydrate, you will feel 'little zingers' (quote) as your nerves come back to life (or whatever they do). This is only partially correct. You will feel the little zingers, but as your teeth fully rehydrate, the pain becomes more migrane in effect, with each additional tooth hurting more than the last. No pain killer helped me, and I'm very responsive to them. Consider Zoom/ any "in-chair" whitening your last resort. If you're coming to us, you don't have movie star treatment at your disposal anyway

[On a personal level, I have never felt like I was actually contributing to SF before this post, some 1+ years of membership and a few months of lurking. I hope I have done some good in this wonderful community. I doubt (and hope!) that anyone has had more experience with personal bleaching than I have. Moral of the story, think before you plink (fluoride drops into your newborn's meals).]
