Thoughts on this bed

considering building my spin on this design. I like the simplicity, dont necessarily love the wood. So I'm considering Black Walnut for the visable parts and oak for the others.

I think it will fit the design of my nightstand.

Also excited about having a bed worthy of actual linen, linens (thanks for the D.Porthault recommendation vox).

Looks simple enough to be easy to reproduce. Although if that wooden edge sticks past the mattress then my shins would never forgive me for getting this bed.

I love minimal, very nice in my opinion.

Not sure about the colour of the wood, but I think the shape would look good in a clean minimal-y room, but as you know, I know little.

Garb, You make an excellent point. I think I will build it so that its not obtrusive, and that the full width of the darker wood boards dont extend past the mattress. Maybe 2-3" around.

Yeah, really. I had a bed that did that when I was much younger and if you got up to go to the loo in the night and were not careful going back to bed it could be savage.

agreed, here's what black walnut looks like:

I like natural wood finishes, so I dont use stains.

For this, I intend to finish with tung oil and seal with satin poly wiped on, then immediately wiped off. Which will seal it but not leave a 'poly' looking finish.

Looks good, my only observation, from looking at furniture recently is whilst being able to see the "grain" or whatever the swirls are called looks good on all light wood it only looks good on furniture made from dark wood/wood with a dark finish that is very expensive. I don't know if this is to do with the quality of the wood itself or the way it was finished or what, but anyway it was just my observation and is based on no logic or knowledge of any sort. I saw an absolutely gorgeous table recently finished in such a way that it emphasised the dramatic natural colouring and variations of some truly stunning looking wood, sadly it was completely and absolutely out of my price range, but it was beautiful.

I have a price range for this, and once i price out the lumber i'll know for certain.

I expect it will be less expensive then the exotic hardwood I used for my nightstand, but I want something that is also dark wood.

My nightstand is Gaboon and Macassar ebony combined with darker cuts of Hondo rosewood, now aged 6months with a linseed oil/wax finish.

I had a bed like this at my old apartment. I had this japanese thing going on. Anyways going to the restroom late at night I would come back and smack the shit out of my shine. Got rid of the bed within 6 months.

If your going to do a platform then have it be more like a block going all the way to the floor. You may bump your toe but not nearly as painful as hitting your chin on it.

thought about that, and what I think i will do is have it so that the board doesn't stick out past the mattress, and make corner pieces which keep the mattress in place.

The original design looks like a nightmare for shins.

I have pretty much this exact bed and have never had a problem hitting my shins.

Ditto. Learned in about two weeks. No issue since.
