Changing the fit of a Pea Coat

I apologize if this question has already been answered here, or if I should have posted in the existing Pea Coat thread. Anyway.. Just got a Pea Coat and had a few questions about changing the fit by moving the buttons. I would like a little bit more room in the mid-section/rear. Can I move the front buttons to accomplish that? Would it look right? Difficult to do? Thanks!

you can move the buttons towards the left just a tad on the right side, and it will open the coat up slightly. On the other hand, it'll throw the fit of the coat way off.

Thanks for the reply. In what way will it throw the fit of the coat off?

you're broadening the front more than the original pattern intended, the back will bow in the middle. It'd be ok if you have Captain America-type posture at all times, though....

switch out the buttons for toggle fasteners on the side and you'll have more room and a totally unique coat.

this has the makings of a disaster.

Sell the peacoat in B&S, buy one that fits.

I was wondering if anyone might have had luck altering a thick cotton peacoat. I was thinking of maybe taking it in an inch or two as it is too boxy. It doesn't have a lining so might make alterations easier. But anyone has had any experience with alterations without moving buttons? I get a feeling that moving buttons alters the look (which i like) of a coat.

A good tailor can take in the sides.

BTW all this stuff should be raised in the uber-peacoat thread. That is the thread's purpose -- to aggregate all the worldy knowledge of peacoats. And to stop the madness of 35 peacoat threads fighting for pole position on the front page.
