the perception that the far east, and japan in particular, as some unapproachable mystery is just as cliched as saying they're all animu nerds fuuma can prob talk about eastern mystery in 19th century american lit here

Not really, I don't know much about American lit. I know about Japonisme though...

But yeah the mystery of the orient pretty much died in the early 20th century.
