"Helpless" may be the best CSNY song

Dudes, do you agree? It's not my favorite CSNY song by any means but its sheer perfection probably makes it their best. The instrumentation is great, the harmonies are pure genius, the lyrics are stunning. IIRC, Jerry Garcia is playing slide.

I like the song, but that version gave me an urge to set fire to my ears. I don't and likely will never "get" Neil Young. He defines the term "self-indulgent, pseudo-artist" to me and his voice makes me want to take an icepick to...sorry...back in control. Steven Stills guitar work on that song is the only thing that saves the performance.

The answer to the question is "Southern Cross" which is technically a CSN song, not a CSNY song. Pure genius.

I disagree re: Neil, but yeah Southern Cross is tremendous. I've seen CSN and CSNY live several times and that always brings the house down. One of my favorite CSN songs is actually one that appears on a Stills album, but Crosby and Nash sang on it..."As I Come of Age." Here's a version. It's simple but so perfect. Not a huge fan of the electric organ on this version but it is still epic.

Also outstanding.

Southern Cross is the answer to the question "What are the top five rock/pop songs ever written about sailing?" All five are Southern Cross because every other song ever written about sailing sucks.

"Got out of town on a boat going to southern islands.
Sailing a reach, before a following sea.
We were making for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete.

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
We got 80 feet on the waterline, nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away."

F'ing awesome.

Hell, I thought you were going to talk about the Diamondhead song.

Thanks. I'm not a fan of Bruce Springsteen either, so you might want to add that to your prayer.

On this we can agree. Springsteen fits your earlier description better, anyway. If calling yourself "The Boss' ain't self-indulgent, I'm not sure what is.

Neil's got two albums in my personal top 20, "On the Beach" and "Harvest." When he's on, he's on.
