I nervously stare at the phone for 5 seconds as the call is coming in as I decide to answer it or not. If I do, I delay before I utter a monotone "...hello."

Depends on the person. How much I like them / need to pretend I like them determines how happyI am/pretend to be. If I don't know the number, I answer "Wei, Ni Hao, this is ___ ___" in case it's business.

At work:
I respond to pages from other physicians or nurses other than my own with, "Hi, this is *** ***** with neurosurgery." I never refer to myself as "Dr. *****."

To my nurses and co-residents I say, "Hey, it's ***."

At home/cell:
"Hello."

I've done this before. They used to call once a week from the same service telling me I won some time share somewhere, I did that and they stopped and haven't called back since.

I think 'ahoy - hoy' is the correct phrase for answering a telephone call. I say 'hello' (and give my name) at work though.
