A topic that is actually not so important to me but that I see mentioned on several clothes fora is the so called iGent-phenomenon. It seems to concern people who are basically dressing up somehow unrealistically in respect to modern society or the world as it is today or who are faking to be elegant to give such an impression online. It is a term only the Americans could have made up because, due to their own cultural and traditional insecurity, they seem to be afraid of anything but their own time and moment in history (i.e. now). It is the position of the parvenu.
The British, for example, have a long tradition of dressing-up or pretending to and enjoying it. A certain eccentricity or the living-out of ones predilections is never honestly ridiculed but at worst benevolently smiled upon if not applauded. They have such a long-standing social consensus that noone would think that such extravacances could endanger their culture itself. And this, again, shows a very confident and relaxed stance towards ones own heritage.
Here, also an interesting parallel with the ostentatious and quite hypocritically exaggerated American aversion against lies (even harmless ones) and alc can be drawn...which is of course only an overcompensation cause no one on the planet loves lies and alc as much as the Americans. It is the result of a denaturalized spirit furthered by a strong Puritan (Protestant) way of thinking that makes them perpetually have a bad conscious...it is said insecurity in ones own civilisation that makes them judge others rather than themselves. A lack of irony and elegance that makes the parvenu nitpicking and humorless.
