Almost always wear this jacket with a tie, but a friend in another city wanted to see a picture of it and I was too lazy to put a tie on, also a little drunk so excuse the disheveled hair and weird expression. Anyways, I think that this is acceptable and appropriate:

+1, think slim shirts can work but otherwise you look "special," also looks better if you have something over the shirt (jacket, sweater, etc.)

That last pic is hilarious. Even vanna is kinda pushing it but is sorta ok with the boot tuck. Still don't like it much.

But yea, it can definitely work but there aren't necessarily "rules" to it. Sometimes it can look good and others it doesn't. If you are unsure if it looks good on you, chances are it doesn't

The last pic is ok, he's wearing trickers (but i'd change the laces), his collar is small and is befitten for a top button closure. Something I'd wear but I don't do that type of jean or wristwatch.

Meh, I've never seen a button up shirt look right with the top button buttoned without a tie. Shoreman's quotes above with the plaid shirts and a vest or something else busy looked close to good to me, but I still think they would have looked better with the top button unbuttoned. Ay, vatos!

I think that the use of the top button without a tie should only be with slim-fit shirts in an effort to contain a little more form. I find it working with smaller collars, button-down collars, or layered under a sweater or vest. Other situations lead it to become more distracting than being fluid with the rest of the outfit. I personally don't do it that often, but a new buy from Caulfield Perparatory works it well.

I can imagine so many fashionable people of times gone by rolling in their graves at this thread. Unbuttoning the top button was once seen as a break of convention, a trend, now it is the norm and people are all but afraid of wearing their shirt with all the buttons up.

I think it usually looks self-consciously fashiony.

Now that I've reached the age of 35, I'm allowed on occasion to leave two unbuttoned.
