Seen/Read "The Road" ?

Just got back from seeing The Road (the adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's book). I thought I should throw it out there that the movie is very faithful to the book in most aspects so if you liked the book you'll probably like the movie. The acting was amazing and the atmosphere was really, really startling.

I would definitely recommend it if anyone was on the fence about seeing it. The most gut wrenching fact about the movie is how faithfully it likely projects how people would act in a similar post-apocalyptic situation.

Monotonous.

Lacks any of the drive of the book and completely loses the bond between father and child that makes the journey and book unbearable.

Maybe not the filmmakers fault - much of that was expressed internally - but reliance on bargaining with The Woman and putting a gun to the kid's head is a weak substitute.

Really? I really thought they portrayed the father/son pretty well.

how this book won a Pulitzer is beyond me. was not a fan of the characterization, pacing, plot (or lack thereof) or prose. the worldbuilding was obviously top notch, but i don't think that warrants a Pulitzer.

probably won't see the movie.

Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of the book myself. The "post-apocalyptic landscape" has become so ubuquitous in pop culture that reading numerous descriptions of it was rather boring. I loved No Country though.

I liked the book, but it's probably the second-weakest of the handful of Cormac McCarthy books I've read.

Blood Meridian by Cormac is an amazing book. Sometimes a difficult read, but some of the imagery in it would lend itself to a great movie. Would resemble The Proposition, but be bleaker.

I thought the book was so damn gloomy and downbeat I have no desire to see the movie. But, then, every one of the five Cormac McCarthy books I've read have been pretty damn downbeat. They're supposed to be making a movie of "Blood Meridian." It's supposed to be due out sometime next year. I wonder whom they'll get to play Judge Holden.

The Judge is the scariest fictional character I've ever come across. Pure evil.

Which have you read? I'm halfway through the Border trilogy and have also read Meridian, No Country, and Road. Are any others worthwhile?
