Kwanzaa - do people actually celebrate this?

Just curious. I understand the desire by black people to feel connected to their roots, but it just seems bizzarre to me that people would celebrate a holiday made up by some guy in the 60's instead of any actual african holiday.

Most holidays are made up by some dude at somepoint.

I've never met anyone that celebrates this.

I've heard of more people celebrating Festivus than Kwanzaa.

I'll celebrate any holiday you've got.

I'm sure there are some Kwanzonians around me. There is a local Kwanzaa fest, and I know merchants selling Kwanzaa apparel.

You simply move in the wrong social circles.

I can't find the source, but I remember reading/hearing as a joke that "Kwanzaa is just a holiday to trick white people into thinking that blacks might one day go back to Africa".

And while we're at it, Passover and Ramadan, those are bullshit too right?

No, because the celebration of Passover and Ramadan is very widespread. ?

All the black people I've ever known, even the ones who are from Africa as opposed to African-American in the common sense of the word, do not celebrate Kwanzaa. I'm sure there are people who celebrate it though.

And speaking of Festivus, I think most people air their grievances at holiday parties one time or another anyway...

I thought it was more recent than the 60's, it seems to me it was the 80's but I may be wrong.

I live the NYC area. I have many black friends. I have many African immigrant acquaintances. I know many blacks from the Caribbean islands.

None of them celebrate Kwazaa.

Must be Hallmark pushing it.

THe local black student union was doing a kwanzaa celebration at the quad on campus. I drove by just to check it out. There were 12 people there. The University has 10,000+ students.

I know more white people than black people who celebrate Kwanzaa.
