Phat Guido is a pretty stocky man though obviously fit. You can take style cues from him.

my best style suggestion is to lose weight. Help with the depression, help with the style, help with general fitness, get you out of the house....etc.

And, in case there was any doubt as to my suggestion for a method toward doing this...take up boxing son.

100% true.
Simply dressing better would be just a superficial fix. IMO, you will just be a well-dressed fat guy. Losing weight will do infinately more to improve your looks and self-esteem than dressing better.

I think he knows that losing weight would be a good idea. You guys come off kind of dickish by telling him that like it's new information.

My advice would be to find clothes that fit right. A specialty store like Hyroop's would probably be able to help you. If you have the money, good custom clothes would go a long way.

The truth hurts, get over it. He needs to lose weight, become more confident and not find a "handsome suit" to transform him or hide the flaws. He has to do this himself, there is only so much we can do to irritate him into taking action.

Putting a bandaid over a broken leg IMO. Working out will release endorphins, might help with his depression and give him a sense of accomplishment.

Are we talking Rosie O'Donnell here? Or the full-on John Candy?

There's really not that much difference there.

Lose weight, obviously.

But if that's not an option, dress like a lumberjack (real lumberjack, not $400 Japanese flannel lumberjack, those brands won't fit you anyway) or other outdoorsy type. Grow a beard. You're just going to look silly trying to be a fashionista.

If he were going for a thin look, he could probably drop like 10-15 pounds, but he looks perfectly slim and fit.
