martial arts in l.a. for a 5 year-old? - Page 2

decided against the dojo on sawtelle because my friend took his son there and said it was "too disneyland."

for the same reason i'm not interested in the capoeira. it seems like it will be too much music and too much emphasis on fun.

retro, if you know of a place on the westside that isn't too disneyland, let me know.

I've been assigned a few times to teach karate to beginner kids ages 4-7, and find that very few of them have the coordination to learn proper technique. Not to mention the fact that learning forms in karate, TKD, or classical Chinese arts is way beyond the attention span of the typical 5 year old. So I think more kids take to Judo at that age, since it is generally a much more hands-on, gross motor skill kind of sport.
...

^ fully agreed, have had to try to teach some so young they haven't differentiated clearly between right and left yet.

Many, if not most kids MA classes are going to have some "disneyland" aspect because a lot of parents do not like their kids getting yelled at, and kids stay more interested with instructors that are more yell leader than drill sergeant.

If don't have any particular focus on learning Japanese culture as a goal, you might want to look into Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which has its roots in judo. Rickson Gracie has a school out on the west side that I believe has kids classes.

Also, as a random thought, if you want something heavy on ritual, discipline, and technique, but not a lot of practical use, you could consider kendo. There's a kendo dojo over near the Sawtelle strip, and a few others scattered throughut the South Bay and downtown.

Last, if you decide to go the karate route, PM me about any schools you may run across. I can probably help steer you clear of the most egregious McDojos in town. The best question to ask any school is how long it takes for a student to reach black belt. If they tell you a year or two, or they offer some kind of "black belt club" where you pay extra for an accelerated promotion, it's a belt mill--walk away.

For me, that is exactly why I wanted my kid to start karate at a young age. Mine started at five and it greatly improved his motor skills, balance and strength; not to mention his self-confidence.

yeah, my judo dojo doesn't let kids (under 13) do armbars or chokes. I am not sure what is left in BJJ

^fair enough, you'd need a very patient instructor with a good touch with kids then..

My 4 yr old has been doing Tae Kwon Do for close to a year and he positively loves it. It's amazing watching him sit still with other kids for the 5 minute initial meditation period before they get the class started.

Mia does BJJ and she is six. She loves it . She is a fast learner and takes it serious.
I guess it all depends on the kid.
