socks - Page 3

So I have a sock query for the SF folks at large: I have noticed a real groundswell as of late in wild socks. Vivid colors and expressive patterns are all over. Over the past year or so, I have incorporated some bright colors and unusual patterns into my collection.

The question is this: knowing socks traditionally match the pants, not the shoes, knowing that personal style modifies or obviates more rigid fashion rules, how do folks on the forum feel about the more colorful or irreverent socks with business attire?

Personally I am not a fan. I appreciate the sentiment of wishing to have some fun, but I question whether or not one really wants to wear a fit which strongly draws the eye down to one's feet. For me, one of the primary requirements of good business dressing is that it should not draw too much attention to itself. Rather, it should make YOU look great. This is why the eye should be drawn to one's face via use of the classic triad of men's business dress accessories (shirt, tie, square)

That being said, I do admit to liking some rather loud shoes which fly a bit in contrast of the above referenced theory. shog[1].gif However, I would like to think that I wear them only when it is appropriate for me to assume a FU sort of position. And when doing so, I find it especially important to counter them with socks that are subtle.

Much of this, comes down to personal taste of course. One man's 'rocking sprezz' is another man's ridiculous foppery.

As a Company we noticed a big change around 3/4 years ago. Socks seem to be the "new ties". A lot of people is now adding a touch of colour wearing colourful socks, instead of colourful ties. I'm not entering the discussion about it is good or not, as this is depending on personal taste, just would like to point out our files show this is the trend. Specially in US people is wearing more bold and big design, while in Europe the matter is focus on the colours only.

One day I were some very loud Richard James socks. At a meeting I am sitting co-worker, an older gentleman with impeccable but conservative taste, with whom I often discuss fashion. During the meeting he leans over and says: soto voce, "solid socks." I happily reply, "Thanks, I like them." He furrows his brow, "No, I'm telling you: a suit means you were solid socks, not funny ones with patterns." Zing!

I agree with a previous post: Socks are the new ties. You can get more creative with socks than with ties, and even if the socks are "funky," you can show more personality with less subtlety.

I recently bought some Vivarati socks ( www.vivarati.com ) and I'm very happy with them.

This is true.

Although I wish the emphasis would go back to ties. As to notice and appreciate socks you must focus on the feet. Far away from the wearer's face. This is awkward. The whole reason behind the 'holy trinity' of mens dressing (shirt, tie, square) is to focus attention you your face. And this is how is should be. As we do not communicate/connect well with others while looking at their feet.

I wish this weren't true - as I'm a 'shoe guy' who loves to watch what shoes everyone is wearing. But it is true. We simply don't communicate well by looking at feet!

I personally don't mind a loud color in a sock - but really STRONG patterns don't appeal to me.
