Do you prefer to pay with credit card directly, or with PayPal?

On my website, I offer costumers the option to pay with credit cards directly, or with PayPal. The fees with PayPal are about .5-1.5% higher depending on the transaction. About 20% of customers so far have chosen PayPal. As a customer on other websites, I always pay with my card directly. If you prefer PayPal, why? Are you using PayPal to pay with a credit card, or some other source like bank account or PayPal balance? Most importantly, would you not make the purchase if I stopped accepting PayPal?

Maybe I'm backward, but I prefer Paypal when I know I am dealing with a small tiny business/sole proprietorship, and credit card when it's a credible operation.

Same here. Paypal has a little more buyer protection and that comforts me in case someone tries to pull anything.

Actually, Paypal has far less buyer protection for non-eBay purchases.

I greatly prefer direct CC payments.

Does it? I was always under the impression that it was a little safer. Luckily, I've never been scammed or had any problems though, so this is one thing I'm kind of glad I've been ignorant of.

I ALWAYS prefer to use my credit card, because they are far more likely to protect me.

Something goes wrong? "Here's your new card overnighted to you sir, we've removed the fraudulent charges, sorry for the problems".

Paypal just seems too shady of an operation for me to use them. In fact, I avoid ebay and paypal like the plague.

Paypal, because I simply don't trust little mom and pop shops to protect my CC or bank account #s. Even though there are many faults with PP, they're probably a little better at the security/fraud thing.

paying with a credit card THROUGH paypal is the safest way to go

this way you may obtain dispute resolution through paypal, or if that fails, you have the option to do a credit card chargeback.

+1. Paypal keeps my CC number unknown to small merchants, yet I don't have to rely on paypal's lousy dispute resolution system. My bank is much better at resolving disputes, with a longer period to file disputes. This allows me to be patient while I try to resolve any issues directly with the merchant.

I have not found that to be the case. I much prefer using my credit card. Paypal is another layer that adds little protection, but opens up significant risks (especially if you link a bank account to it).

Given the option, as a consumer, I would pay with a credit card through Paypal. The great thing about a paypal link (and saved passwords) is that I don't have to move my hand from the mouse to complete the transaction...no need to type my cc# or my address or anything like that.

I wouldn't avoid an online retailer if it refused to accept paypal, though.

For eBay purchases, I use PayPal.

For all other online purchases, I use my credit card.

I like the option on paypal because it lets me use money I make from selling on the forum which is really often 'extra cash'
