Taking the girlfriend to New York for Christmas / New Years.

Hey all,

Wanted to get some advice re: taking my girlfriend to New York over Christmas and New Years.

Her expectations are through the roof, so I can either start abusing her to lower expectations or meet them.

Considering abuse is a criminal offence, I decided on the latter.

I used to live in Manhattan, and really shied away from anything touristy.

She's only been to New York once, and when she was 16.

Now we're in our twenties.

Things to consider: I want to go shopping and be drunk for most of the trip, she wants a lot of romantic shit, I want to still have some money by the end of this trip.

I'm looking for: Trip suggestions, shopping destinations, romantic night ideas, links to posts that have already answered everything, etc etc.

enjoy the New Years hotel prices. Huge markup. shopping: Bergdorf Goodman. It could all end right there. SoHo store are prime too. Romance: dinner at Eleven Madison Park. A stunning restaurant all around. Ice Skating at Bryant Park. Free admission, pay for the rental skates. Top of the Rock. Touristy, yes, but still a stunning view even for a native.

Those are great ideas. Bryant park sounds great, as does top of the rock. Might be a little too difficult getting reservations at 11 madison though, eh?

Go for the later or earlier times. Jean Georges is another great idea.

book it at the OpenTable website and try for earlier or later on weekdays. Review.

We're going to be there eight days. Any other romantic/ touristy places that aren't *completely* cliche? Like, going to the Empire State or Madam Teusseauds or Double Decker tours just exploits the internationals. I'm looking more private, maybe walking tour ideas / hidden gems?

walking tours are nice, but be watchful of the weather. Don't book something in advance, if you can avoid it. New Year last year was bitterly cold, I had to duck into a warm pizza place as I couldn't make the 6 block trip home from the subway one evening. It hurt. The Opera is nice, gives you both a chance to dawn fancy clothes, eat out before, and get drinks after. I'm short of romantic ideas, the GF and I work too many hours to enjoy stuff. Oh, and absolutely go to the Met. Astounding how big it is, but don't plan on doing the entire museum. It's too big, focus on a few areas and really appreciate what they have. The Guggenheim has a Kandinsy thing going on until mid-Jan, really awesome (but he was always one of my favorites so I'm biased). Then, get lunch/dinner at Giovanni 25, family restaurant of a StyleForvm member.

-_- damn there's that new park on the lower west side that opened up. i forget what it's called. supposed to be pretty nice tho.

check out all the art galleries (bonni benrubi is a pretty good one) on 57th and I think 6th. It's near Bergdorf's and T&A/C&J. They're in this one building and you can just walk in. -_-; well technically they're for buyers but I don't think they mind visitors.

Instead of staying in a NYC hotel, consider staying at a hotel across the Hudson River (e.g. Sheraton Lincoln Harbor). It's just a 10-minute bus-ride from NYC. And you get to see the Manhattan skyline from across the harbor.

10 minute bus ride doesn't seem like much, but it can be a huge pain in the ass (or added cab fare) when coming home late at the end of the night, most likely very tired and drunk If she has only been there once, I think you can do stuff like the art museum, etc. with out it being cliche. I'd totally skip the Guggenheim and not think twice about it. Dim Sum in China Town would be a fun (cheap) lunch...

Jesus, this is why I don't want to ever get a high-maintenance girlfriend. You are looking at $500 a day not including shopping cost.

if you like, PM me a pic of your girlfriend and depending on how she looks, I'll take her off your hands during your trip and show her the ins and outs of NYC and you can get drunk all your want. No need to thank me, just helping out a fellow forum member.

Not even, I have a place in the Upper West Side that I'll be staying at. Any sort of shopping costs will be incurred by her, solely. Just needed advice on places to go, like the Guggenheim and other walking places, not life lessons.
