Cleaning shirts -- hand or machine

In reading over the many debates that have occurred on this forum over the years about cleaning dress shirts, a clear concensus has always been arrived at that washing shirts at home is far superior to dry-cleaning. However, unless I missed something, there has never seemed to be agreement over whether shirts should be handwashed or done in the machine. Could someone settle this? Does hand-washing the shirts really make that big a difference -- ie. does it extend the life of the shirts that much longer?

I don't think anyone has seriously advocated handwashing all of one's dress shirts. It would take forever. Alex Kabbaz posted a treatise on washing and ironing dress shirts and IIRC he suggests machine washing with Tide powdered detergent. I think most people who wash their own shirts do it by machine. I only hand-wash sweaters. Pretty much everything else that doesn't get dry-cleaned goes in the washer.
