I'm not expecting the greatest most isolated pristine beaches or a ton of nightlife or whatever. This is a surplus part of the trip, we're already doing 2 days in Istanbul, a little over a week in hong kong, a stop in Macau, and about 4 days in Singapore. We basically had a couple of free days and figured a short ferry ride to an island where there is nothing to do / see / shop / etc would be a bit of welcome downtime in the middle of a bunch of hectic cities.

We considered running up to Malaysia and going somewhere like Tiomen, but I dont really feel like a bus ride then a ferry when I can ust hop a ferry from Singapore...

Also thought about dropping over to Vietnam to check out m@t's rolling stories, but that would hardly be relaxing would it?

strongly suggest you cut down singapore if possible.

As for the travels. Tioman you can ferry straight from Singapore. Rawa is better though. Less Singaporean families there...anyhow, enjoy Bintan (and the rest of the trip too). Sounds great....

Apperantly the Singapore -> Tioman ferry no longer runs.

We'll do Vietnam next time around, it's on my list.

My sister is working there, so a lot of the reason we are going is to see her.

There are direct flights to Tioman from Singapore instead of the ferry now. www.berjaya-air.com

Wtf are you wtf-ing about? Did TS say that he was looking for hookers? I only noted that he wanted to go to a relaxing place by taking a ferry. You would avoid a cheap and nice resort because the island has hookers? Well..please do not travel out of your country then. Every country/major city has hookers.

For the record and the benefit of users that searched on "Tioman", like me, the ferry from Singapore to Tioman has ceased operation, yes. There's still the plane option, as pointed out, but you need to not be afraid of flying, because the position of the landing strip requires some aerial acrobatics. Most people take a car/van/coach up to Mersing and then hop across to Tioman by ferry. This now takes about an hour, depending on your village; the more northerly villages, Salang, ABC etc. take about 30 minutes longer. Also, Tioman isn't better than Rawa, I beg to differ. Rawa is tiny, you can probably walk around it in a few hours, whereas Tioman is huge, has tons of pristine jungle, an excellent hiking hill, a waterfall, lots of eateries, great coral reefs nearby, a marine park, a marina, a golf course and great surf during the NE monsoon. Incidentally, other great islands to try (especially if you're into snorkeling and/or scuba diving) are Dayang, Aur, Besar, Hujung, Tengah and the lesser known Harimau, Menserip and Permanggil, all listed in the World Atlas of Coal Reefs.
