Hi all, new to the style forum. I'm looking for a barber in NYC. I've just moved back about 4 months ago, from Baltimore where I met the best barber I've ever had. Sam, my barber in Baltimore at The Quintessential Gentleman is a tonsorial dream made flesh. He knows exactly what I want with minimal description, great rapport, interesting conversation, the old fashioned decorum I consider crucial in the barber shop, and he deals with cowlicks like nobody's business. All told everything one could want in a barber. I had a nightmare going back to the place I used to, on the lower east, a place called Neighborhood Barber. I used to get my hair cut there by Daniel, who was fantastic for what I was wearing at the time, a big pompadour in greaser style (dry) swept all the way back, with horn rimmed glasses (everyone called me Clark Kent). Unfortunately Daniel doesn't work there anymore and they didn't know where he was now (...) so I sat in with the next guy that had an opening. He had a rather distinctive style of cutting hair, with a lot of fluttering tiny little snips all around, which struck me as being mostly flash. he didn't give the transition between the top of my head and the sides a flattering shape at all, and made the sides WAY too short. Here's the worst part. i asked him to "deal" with the cowlick. I have one cowlick marring an otherwise almost perfect head of hair, right in the front on the lower side of my part, a little weird wave. Now, "dealing" with a cowlick is best described by a quote from my barber Sam. Sam says "its like you see a picture of a horse that you like, its like asking the artist of that picture 'hey man, how did you draw that horse?'" In short, it is an art. its something that's intuitive. At first this dip just thinned it out, which doesn't actually work on this one, and I told him so. strike one. Then he says "I a-cut it shorter" and he did. I was a bit dazed by the summer heat, so i told him try again, so he cuts it SHORTER. AAAAAHHHH! I wanted to run out screaming. I paid, and left a good tip, left the store and found after my hair dried off that I had a new part about an inch closer to center-head and what looked like a sideburn on my forehead! It took four and a half months to recover from this one. The 3 cuts I've had since I got lucky enough to be in Baltimore in time for; I went to Sam. I look in the other direction now when I pass Neighborhood barber, which is unfortunate because I don't want to look into my old workplace, I Coppi across the street either! Help me find my ideal barber in NYC people! Quintessential Gentleman charges 25 for the best cut I've ever had, and they're extremely consistent. Its a class act all the way, too. All wood interior, a great selection of grooming / beauty products for men, shave brushes straight razors and strops. They also offer hot lather straight razor shaves, manicures massages facials and other crap for men, too. I'm looking for the same skill and consistency in a barber for a young guy, for the same price or less (25 per, that I can still tip him very well), preferrably in Manhattan, but obviously, anywhere nearer than Baltimore will do (half joking here). He also has to speak english very well because I communicate a lot and with specificity. Thanks to all who respond!
